Day Three Hundred and Fifty Seven: 15th July 2013

demonised and tortured
a single eye, red rimmed
peers from the darkness
a foggy window to an anguished soul
seeking redemption and salvation

but from what?

  1. It’s dark and rainy – the kind of drizzle that goes on for hours. You’re driving a lonely stretch of highway, fog rolling across the road in the low areas. Your eyes keep drifting shut and you just want to sleep. Sleep. Sleep. You put the window down in an effort to keep awake. Sleep. Sleep. Sleep. Then, as if by magic, a red light appears in front of you. Pulling closer as if hypnotized, you realize it’s a car with one tail light out. You follow to…?

    • (finally have had time)

I follow you to a dead end
mesmerised by the floating red orb
      unblinking my eyes sting
      gingerly feeling the brake
      I stop slowly and hesitate
watery beads bounce from my forehead
      when I open the door…?

  2. I see him standing there, rain slowly dripping from his cowboy hat.

“Ma’am, are you okay? I seen your lights kind of going zig-zag behind me and I just pulled over figuring, well, hoping you’d follow so I could get you safely off the road. Now that I see you, you sure look done in to me. Is there someone I can call to come and get you?”

What? Huh? I realized my mind had just shut off, gone to sleep, even while I was driving. Not good. Not good at all. And who was this cowboy? He looks friendly enough, but don’t they all? What did he just say?

“Ma’am, are you okay? I’m sorry, but I just can’t leave you here this way. Let me call someone for you.”

“No, that’s okay, I’m just tired is all and I…”

His arms were so warm and I felt so safe in the red fuzziness. Hmm, I could stay here forever, but I knew it was time to get up and get the coffee going. Eyes opening and wait, wait, whose arm is this and what’s going on?
