***UPDATE***4th May 2014

So I have just completed my second National Poetry Writing Month challenge – NaPoWriMo – and am now wondering in which direction I want this blog to progress…

Regular followers will know I began the blog as a Poem and Drawing a Day – my own work – and after twelve months (which included my first NaPoWriMo) I wound back to a poem and drawing a week.

So what now?

After much consideration I am still going to aim for a poem and drawing a week (if not more), but in between I think I will reblog other poetry from blogs I find on WordPress. I come across lots of poems I enjoy and a few I REALLY enjoy! So I will experiment with this idea for while and see how it goes …. come along with me πŸ™‚

***UPDATE***28th July 2013

This blog began it’s life entitled A Poem and A Drawing A day, and after one year/365 days I decided that I needed to refocus some energy into other projects – but I didn’t want to give up the poetry blog completely, and so began A Poem and Drawing a Week. Theoretically this should mean the work will be of a higher calibre, as I will have time to ponder and edit – or maybe writing β€˜off the cuff’ and β€˜in the moment’ will prove to be superior in terms of capturing the emotive state, only time will tell…

I began writing poetry when I was about thirteen, and wrote madly during my teenage years. The onslaught of adulthood slowed that process up, and I wrote only intermittently over the next few decades, with visual art coming to the forefront of my creative life.

The intention of the poetry and drawing blog which I began on 24th July 2012 was to incorporate my lost love of writing poetry with the visual arts that I had been involved with for the past twenty years. Creating the blog and thereby putting it into the public sphere also gives me concrete incentive, and disciplines me to write, draw and publish every day.

As a teenager writing poetry was a release for teenage angst, and to a degree these current poems serve a similar function – as a release for adult angst, with many of them probing the darker recesses of the mind.

The drawings are intended to be a fast and instinctive responses to the poetry, with the intention of choosing a selection at the end of the 365 days, and developing them further in larger format drawings.

  1. It still amazes me! I do it in the first half hour of every day, before I eat, drink or speak. I choose 3 oil pastels first and have to express with those colors, then I write “I am….” and put down whatever the creation tells me. I then pick up my pen and write on the opposite page of my artist sketchbook. It usually rhymes (2nd and 4th) and is usually 6 or 7 verses. I recite whenever and wherever I can. I also write commissioned poems for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, etc. It is a gift I am very grateful for.

  4. I’m so jealous with you Dawn. Your arts are so amazing, and I really do like it. I even don’t know what I really want to do for my life. So random.
